Para-Athlete Pushes Towards An Inclusive Future For Youth In Nepal
In 2019, Sarita Thulung competed on the world stage in para-swimming, powerlifting, wheelchair dancing, and wheelchair basketball, but she knows that not all persons with disabilities in Nepal are encouraged to pursue sport. She sees the lack of infrastructure and absence of attention at every level of society that prevent persons with disabilities from experiencing the many benefits of physical activity. However, Sarita is ready for the challenge and advocates for more inclusive communities through ENGAGE, a non-profit organization in Nepal, where she supports efforts to create inclusive sport spaces.
Sarita also runs her own cloth business and uses proceeds to support her advocacy work. Through her experiences in the GSMP, she hopes to hone her skills in management and leadership, as well as learn new strategies for teaching. For GSMP: Sport for Community 2022, Sarita will be mentored by Doug Garner, Assistant Director of Campus Recreation for Adapted Sports at the University of Texas-Arlington, and his team in Arlington, TX.
