Nepal Physician Incorporates Adaptive Sports Into Rehabilitation
As a student in Nepal, Raju excelled in the subject of science, but his favorite class was Physical Education. Raju decided to combine his two interests to earn a M.D. in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation from BSMMU in Bangladesh. Now he serves as a Medical Director and Consultant at Nepal’s Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Centre (SIRC), using sports as a crucial component of recovery. He is also president of the National Physical Disabled Table Tennis Association, collaborating with the Nepal Paralympic Committee to organize adaptive sports activities.
Through these organizations, Raju combats the challenges of limited health care and negative attitudes towards persons with disability in Nepal. However he still hopes to gain a better understanding of an action plan to establish adaptive sports as a vital step in rehabilitation. For GSMP: Sport for Community 2022, Raju will be mentored by Peggy Turner, Adapted Sports Coordinator at TIRR Memorial Hermann, and her team in Houston, TX.
